Ladies of Charity - Association International de Charites

The Ladies of Charity was founded by St. Vincent de Paul in France in 1617. The association spread throughout Europe, the United States, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, the Philippines, all affliated to the Association International de Charites.

It was first organized here by Fr. Zacarias subinas, C.M. in San Marcelino Parish in 1950. In our parish, the Ladies of Charity began in the University of Santo Tomas Hospital in October 6, 1961 under the direction of Sr. Lourdes Lopez, DC, Sr. Carmen Ladesma, DC and other sisters. Fr. Catalino Elloso, O.P. was the first Spiritual Director. The late Mrs. Esperanza Narvasa was the first president. The ladies worked in the hospital and their neighborhood of the parish visiting the sick, aged and poor. They also helped at baptisms, confirmations, and marriage validations.

1965 when Mrs. Luz B. Magsaysay was the National President, our unit was affeliated to the parish. Visits to the sick, aged and dying in the hospital of Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity in Tayuman were added to the aopstolate work.

At present, the members are occupied with the following: Visits to the Laura Vicuņa Center, the hospital of he Missionaries of Charity, the Center for babies in del Pan an and the Malward of the STUH where malnourished babies are admitted for nutriton rehabilitation. The Ladies of Charity donate rice, milk, soap, sugar, garments and even cash for medicines whenever necessary. To maintain this apostolate, the Ladies conduct fund raising activities and donate their own personal funds.

To maintain their zeal and perseverance in their work, member hold yearly recollection, attend seminars and undergo continuing formation to keep abreast of the progress and chanes of this modern world.

The Philippines is tasked by the AIC executive board to care for Asia. We helped Thailad get organized. Our AIC animation team is getting in touch with Taiwan, India, Japan and hopefully our other Asian neighbors.

Lady parishioners who are willing to dedicate their time, talent, treasures and energy to charity work are invited to join and carry on the apostolate in our parish.
